Ponad 100 lat temu Maria Montessori stworzyła system edukacji, który rzucił zupełnie nowe światło na pedagogikę, akcentując pracę "dla dziecka" i odkrywając jego naturalny, kierowany wewnętrznymi siłami rozwój. W myśl tej metody dla prawidłowych postępów dziecka należy stworzyć mu przestrzeń pozwalającą na spontaniczność i twórczość oraz umożliwić wszechstronny rozwój psychofizyczny, kulturalny i społeczny. Koncepcja Marii Montessori przyczyniła się do zmiany tego, w jaki sposób pojmujemy dzieciństwo, jaką rolę w społeczeństwie przypisujemy dzieciom i jaką odpowiedzialność za ich kształtowanie - rodzicom. W "Psychogeometrii" Maria Montessori wyjaśnia, w jaki sposób umysł dziecka na kolejnych etapach rozwoju i nauki przyswaja wiedzę z zakresu geometrii - od poznawania figur, przez ujmowanie relacji między nimi, do wykonywania coraz bardziej złożonych operacji. Ta książka nie zawiera szkolnego kursu geometrii, ale zestaw ćwiczeń, "gimnastykę dla umysłu", która przez umożliwienie dziecku odkrywania stwarza podstawy do zdobywania wiedzy. Odkrycie relacji to zdecydowanie najpewniejszy sposób, aby pobudzić ciekawość. Twierdzenie samo w sobie nie zainteresuje dziecka, które usłyszy je starannie wygłoszone, jednak go nie zrozumie i nie będzie w stanie docenić jego celów, co zmusi je do męczącego wysiłku poznania przedstawianego rozwiązania. Jeśli jednak samodzielnie odkryje relację, sformułuje twierdzenie i przyswoi słowa, aby je właściwie opisać, wtedy rozpali się ogień jego wyobraźni. Wystarczy jedno z takich odkryć, aby otworzyć dla umysłu wspaniałą, nieoczekiwaną ścieżkę. W taki sposób pobudza się zainteresowanie - a tam, gdzie mamy zainteresowanie, mamy też pewność niezliczonych sukcesów.

As a form of treatment, the husband forbids the unnamed woman from working or writing and encourages her to eat well and get plenty of air so that she can recuperate from what he calls a "temporary nervous depression a slight hysterical tendency", a diagnosis common to women during that period.
