Cedric's grandfather takes him to live in England and be educated as an English aristocrat. "How Fauntleroy Occurred, and a Very Real Little Boy Became an Ideal One" is a story written by Frances Burnett in which she compared her famous creation Little Lord Fauntleroy and her youngest son Vivian. In many ways Vivian served as an inspiration for creating the fictional character Cedric Errol. Later in life he wanted to escape from those comparisons and separates himself from the fictional characters, but it was hard to shake them off.

The novel consists of two plots or movements. Apparently wholly disconnected, but always, as the logic of events carries them on, bending nearer and nearer, until the principal dramatis personae meet in Washington, the keystone is slipped into place, and lo, the two are one! Mrs. Burnett possesses consummate constructive skill. When this keystone crowns the arch we see that every character and every event has contributed to the symmetry of the whole. Every part has been wrought and fitted with the artist's instinct for perfection. But analogies cannot be pushed too far, and the similitude of the arch may give a false impression of the two lines along which the story moves. They are, in their nature, wholly unlike. The one, from an opening doubly tragic, passes into the sweetest of idyls; the other from the fairest beginning into the darkest of tragedies.

"Little Lord Fauntleroy" is the first children's novel written by English playwright and author Frances Hodgson Burnett. It was originally published as a serial in the "St. Nicholas Magazine" between November 1885 and October 1886, then as a book by Scribner's in 1886. The accompanying illustrations by Reginald Birch set fashion trends and "Little Lord Fauntleroy" also set a precedent in copyright law when in 1888 its author won a lawsuit against E. V. Seebohm over the rights to theatrical adaptations of the work.

With the deaths of his father's elder brothers, Cedric has now inherited the title Lord Fauntleroy and is the heir to the earldom and a vast estate. Cedric's grandfather wants him to live in England and be educated as an English aristocrat. He offers his son's widow a house and guaranteed income, but he refuses to have anything to do with her, even after she declines his money. However, the Earl is impressed by the appearance and intelligence of his American grandson and is charmed by his innocent nature. Cedric believes his grandfather to be an honorable man and benefactor, and the Earl cannot disappoint him. The Earl therefore becomes a benefactor to his tenants, to their delight, though he takes care to let them know that their benefactor is the child, Lord Fauntleroy. Meanwhile, back in New York, a homeless bootblack named Dick Tipton tells Cedric's old friend Mr. Hobbs, a New York City grocer, that a few years prior, after the death of his parents, Dick's older brother Benjamin married an awful woman who got rid of their only child together after he was born and then left. Benjamin moved to California to open a cattle ranch while Dick ended up in the streets. At the same time, a neglected pretender to Cedric's inheritance appears in England, the pretender's mother claiming that he is the offspring of the Earl's eldest son, Bevis. The claim is investigated by Dick and Benjamin, who come to England and recognize the woman as Benjamin's former wife. She flees, and the Tipton brothers and the pretender, Benjamin's son, do not see her again. Afterward, Benjamin goes back to his cattle ranch in California where he happily raises his son by himself. The Earl is reconciled to his American daughter-in-law, realizing that she is far superior to the impostor. The Earl planned to teach his grandson how to be an aristocrat. Instead, Cedric teaches his grandfather that an aristocrat should practice compassion towards those dependent on him. The Earl becomes the man Cedric always innocently believed him to be. Cedric is happily reunited with his mother, and Mr. Hobbs, who decides to stay to help look after Cedric.

This volume contains four stories, different in kind, but alike in the grace and spirit of their handling. The pretty tale from which the book borrows its name has for heroine a little French girl brought up in an old chateau in Normandy by an aunt who is recluse and denote. Little Saint Elizabeth is educated very much as her great namesake may have been, in a round of religious observances varied by acts of charity,and is trained to meditate much on the state of her soul and the woes of other people. Her head is filled with legends of saints and martyrs, her heart with zeal to emulate their good examples, and also with deep and tender pity, a real hunger after helpfulness for all human suffering. A child of this type transplanted suddenly while still in childhood to the realistic atmosphere of prosperous New York, must inevitably have much to suffer. She is puzzled ; she is lonely; she has no one to direct her conscience. The quaint little figure blindly trying to guess the riddle of duty under these unfamiliar conditions is pathetic, and Mrs. Burnett touches it in with delicate strokes. We are all glad when at last she finds a friend, and when Uncle Bertrand learns to recognize and allow for the spiritual need which is the mainspring of her nature.

A lady from New York, whose surroundings have been those chiefly of literature and art, is alone at a North Carolina watering-place, and amuses herself with a new and interesting type of Southern native humanity, a young girl of great beauty and simplicity, but utterly ignorant of the world in which Miss Olivia Ferrol has lived. The pathos of the story, while there is a touch of unreality about it, is fine and pervading, while the special charm is in the pictures of mountain life in North-Carolina. The book is graceful, and if the plot is a trifle artificial the execution is so skillfully and affectionately done that we are almost ready to forgive the author for limiting herself as she has.
