By the French author, who, along with Flaubert, is generally regarded as a founding-father of nineteenth-century realism in European fiction. His large output of works, collectively entitled „The Human Comedy” (La Comedie Humaine), consists of 95 finished works and 48 unfinished works. The novel „A Start in Life” is part of the „Scenes of Private Life” section of Balzac’s masterpiece. In much of Balzac’s work, the aristocracy is portrayed as vain, duplicitous, and greedy. But in this novel, it is members of the working class who are mercilessly skewered when what starts out as a harmless prank rapidly snowballs into a comedy of errors with profound consequences. A comic novel in which an intrigue about property serves as the excuse for a trip in a public diligence, where a group of people try to mystify each other with strange tales of their lives.

This novel opens in the old town of Guerande which still enclosed by mighty walls and possesses moats still full of water. The houses have not changed and the streets are as they were one hundred years in the past. It is the family seat of the de Guenics. The old society of the town gather here to play cards and gossip, often about the younger generations. The son of the house, Calyste, is going to visit one of the main objects of this gossip and we learn of this person’s past. While on this visit, Calyste hears of Beatrix de Rochefide who is coming to Guerande on a visit. „Béatrix” is an 1839 novel by French author Honoré de Balzac and included in the „Scenes de la vie privée” section of his novel sequence „La Comédie humaine”. Balzac based the characters in this novel on real figures: Félicité des Touches, a celebrated musician and writer, is based on George Sand. Béatrix de Rochefide is based on Marie d’Agoult (who wrote under the pen name of Daniel Stern); Gennaro Conti is based on Franz Liszt; Claude Vignon is based on Gustave Planche.

Opowieść o kobiecie, którą uznano za demonicznego demona - sukkuba, który spółkując z mężczyznami wiedzie ich prosto ku potępieniu i piekłu… Fragmenty opowiadania: Niektórzy, co z zacnego kraju Turenii pochodzili, a widzieli, jak autor gorliwie uganiał się za starożytnościami, dziwnymi przygodami i cudnościami tej błogosławionej okolicy, zapytywali go (wierząc, że o tym na pewno wiedzieć musi), z jakiej przyczyny jedną z ulic miasta Tours Ciepłą zowią, co najwięcej panie zaciekawiło. Odpowiedział im, jako mu bardzo dziwno, że dawni mieszkańcy zapomnieli o wielkiej ilości klasztorów, które przy tej ulicy postawiono; tedy od surowej wstrzemięźliwości mnichów i mniszek tak mury rozgorzały, że kilka niewiast uczciwych, które po tej ulicy zbyt często na odwieczerz chodziły, o stan odmienny pomawiano. (…) Pewien starzec schorzały już i wiekiem zgarbiony, w kącie wino spijał i nic nie mówił, jeno uśmiechał się, usta wykrzywiając modą uczonych, aż wreszcie wyrzekł: – Bajdy!… Bardzo wyraźnie, co autor usłyszał i wnet zrozumiał, że za tym „bajdy” kryje się pewno prawda, którą mógłby te ucieszne historie przyozdobić. Jakoż nazajutrz starzec mu powiada: – Poemat jeden napisałeś tak, że cię zawsze za to szanować będą, bo prawda tam jest od początku do końca, co za rzecz waloru niezwykłego, arcywspaniałego uważam. W tym poemacie piszesz o rycerzu Bruyn, ale pewno nie wiesz, co stało się z oną Mauretanką, którą tenże rycerz w klasztorze umieścił. Ja to wiem dokładnie. Jeżeli wiedzieć chcesz, skąd nazwa ulicy Ciepłej pochodzi, a także jaki był koniec owej mniszki, użyczę ci foliałów, które w archiwach arcybiskupstwa znalazłem, pochodzą one z biblioteki bardzo naruszonej w tych czasach, kiedy nie wiedziałem wieczorem, azali mi do rana głowy z karku nie zdejmą. Dać-że ci tę sprawę do ręki? – Owszem – odpowiedział autor. Tedy ów godny zbieracz prawdy użyczył autorowi kupę starych, zżółkłych i poobdzieranych pergaminów, z których nie bez trudu, na francuską mowę przełożył akty dawnego sądu duchownego...
